Mother In Law Suite Floor Plans
70Mother in Law Suites
At some point in our lives, the thought of having an in-law come live
with you might come into play. The majority of the time its the mother in
law who comes to live with you. Building a mother in law suite can be a great solution. There are many pros and cons to this
living arrangement. Whatever you decide, it should be for the best interest
of your entire family.
There are several things you need to ask yourself and discuss before you
take on the responsibility of taking her in. Will this be a temporary
thing? Will it be long term? Everyone involved should sit down and
discuss what will be needed and or added to make this workable for all.
With any room add-ons or remodeling, do your research and put it to
pencil. Look at as many mother in law suite floor plans and information as you can find. You can save loads doing it yourself, but if you're not a savvy
do it yourself type person, hiring a contractor would be your best bet.
Do your homework if you're going to hire a contractor, ask for
references, ask if they're bonded, if so for how much and its always
good to check out more than one contractor.
Types of Mother In law Suite Floor Plans
-
Garage In-Law Suite
Converting your garage would be perfect for a mother in law suite, because its the same level of your home and no stairs and or steps to go up and down. However, most garages aren't insulated and that will be needed. Adding an extra door would give her extra access to the outside and won't have to use the main door to your home and disturb you. -
Basement In-Law Suites
Most basements are finished, so if you were to convert this into a mother in law suite, it shouldn't be all that hard to do. The only downfall for a basement suite is going up and down the stairs for her. But if you don't see that as a problem for her, then it shouldn't be a problem. -
Spare Room In-Law Suite
If converting your basement and or garage into a mother in law suite isn't doable for neither of you and you would like to have her stay in one of the rooms of your home then that could be done. The pro for this would be, no cost of paying to remodel anything. Also, if something were to happen to her you'd be able to hear her. If she were to be in her own suite, there is a possibility you wouldn't be able to hear her if she would be calling out for help! She would also be a good helper if you have children. She'd be there incase there would be an emergency and need to head out quickly! The con to her staying in one of your rooms is, privacy. That's the one thing people have issues with.
The one thing you need to remember is what works for some may not work for you. Only you and your family know what will work! Regardless of who will be living under your roof, it is a big adjustment for everyone. Whatever your decision ends up being, it surely will be the right one! Make sure everyone is on the right page, with that said, that will make everyone happy!
